China’s growing energy consumption

  • Global energy consumption in 2021 was 163k terawatt-hours (TWh), of which 43k TWh was for China alone. The primary energy consumption in China is dominated by coal, which accounted for more than half of total energy consumption.
  • China’s primary energy consumption has increased significantly over the years. It was growing steadily up until 2000, then it grew exponentially.
  • Primary energy consumption for the rest of the world, especially in the United States and EU remained relatively steady and in recent years even decreasign a little bit.
  • The other country that stands out from the rest of the crowd is India. Although not as steep as China, but the trend shows the country is not slowing down very soon.
